After completing the biggest task of getting the kids admitted to a school, we thought we deserved to relax a bit ( not that we worked too hard on admission), but finding the first excuse for a travel.

So we decided to visit some place not too far from Mumbai and where hassles of train reservations etc are not involved and Matheran was finalized.

Matheran is a hill station (800 meters above see level) about 90 km from Mumbai and would take around 2 to 3 hours to reach. Matheran means “Forest on the forehead” and justifies its meaning so well :).

Matheran was discovered by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the then district collector of Thane district in May 1850. Lord Elphinstone, the then Governor of Bombay laid the foundations of the development as a future hill station. The British developed Matheran as a popular resort to beat the summer heat in the region

So there we went …taking a Mumbai Local train to reach Neral station (nearest station). From Neral you could go either by a taxi (9 km going up the mountains) or by a toy train. We preferred taxi as its instantaneously available. ย The taxi drops us at a point which is around 3 km away from ย Matheran as no vehicles are allowed beyond this point and the only mode of travel is horse, manual rickshaw (pulled by man on foot as in old Kolkata) or the best one on foot which we preferred :).

The place is a real delight. There are so many options to stay…from fancy resort to budget hotels…The palce is the best nature can offer…Lush green forest with various “sight points”. You could move around in a hired horse (Dont worry you dont have to know horseriding ๐Ÿ™‚ or rickshaw if you are averse to walking too much. If you love forests then this is the place to go.

We love the natural beauty and serenity of the place and would love to go back again ๐Ÿ™‚ Posting few of the 500 pics captured by us :

The were little funny moments too like when a monkey tried to takeย toffees from the kid who ย in turn threw the toffees to his Mom’s lap from where the monkey finally took themย confidently ย scaring her completely (to my and kids’ delight ๐Ÿ˜‰ and then sat and enjoyed them after removing wrappers ! :).
